COMBINATION FORMULATIONS:

Physiological Role
Nicotinic acid is converted to its amide which is a component of coenzyme Nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide NAD and its phosphate (NADP) involved in oxidation reduction reactions. These pyridine nucleotides act as hydrogen acceptors in electron transport chain in tissue respiration, glycolysis and fat synthesis. Flavoproteins regenerate them by oxidizing NADH and NADPH.
Deficiency Symptoms
Niacin Deficiency Pellagra, Cardinal Manifestation Of Which Dermatitis, Diarrhoea, Dementia.
Therapeutic Uses
- Prophylactically (20-50 mg/day oral) in people at risk.
- Treatment of pellagra—200 to 500 mg/day.
- Hartnup’s disease .
- Peripheral vascular disease and hypolipidemic.
Adverse Effects
- It is a cutaneous vasodilator
- Dyspepsia, vomiting and diarrhoea occur when full doses are given.
- Dryness and hyperpigmentation of skin.
- Other long time effects liver dysfunction and jaundice.
- Hyperglycemia, precipitation of diabetes.
- Hyperuricaemia and gout, atrial arrhythmias.
- Contraindicated during pregnancy and in children.
Interactions
Postural Hypotension May Occur In Patients On Antihypertensive When They Take Nicotinic acid. |
